Pirates flee as attempt to hijack ship boched

– Nigerian navy rescued 25 foreign crew from a ship that was hijacked by pirates
– The pirates fled after the officers attacked them
– The ship has safelt berthed without causalities
The Nigerian navy has said that its men rescued 25 foreigners from the hands of pirates who were attempting to hijack a merchant ship. The suspected pirates have however fled.
Daily Trust reports that the Nigerian navy made this development known on Sunday, February 7 in Port Harcourt, the capital of Rivers state. He said the ship was bringing cargo to the country at the weekend when the pirates intercepted it.

Capt. Olusegun Soyemi, the executive officer of the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Pathfinder said the crew members consisting of eight Philippine nationals, eight South Africans, five Indians, two Britons and two Thais were rescued safely and the ship also berthed without issue. It was however not clear if the incidencewho vowed to blow up the ship if Nnamdi Kanu, the director of Radio Biafra is not released.
Soyemi said Safmarine Kuramo, a Maersk merchant ship registered in Singapore, was transporting general cargo from Port-Noire, Congo, to the Onne Sea Port in Rivers state.
He said:  “On January 5 at about 08:00 hours; Sufmarine Kuramo was attacked by sea pirates about 60 nautical miles off the coast of Bonny Island (in Rivers). We got may-day distress call that the ship was boarded by an unconfirmed number of sea pirates after entering the nation’s territorial waters
“We immediately dispatched a warship (NNS Centenary) and attack gunboats led by Navy Capt. Chiedozie Okehie of the Eastern Naval Command to rescue the situation.
“The pirates apparently on sighting advancing naval troops fled the scene. The operation was largely successful as all 25 foreign crew members, including the captain are safe and unhurt, while the cargo onboard the ship is intact.”

Capt. Chiedozie Okehie who is the commanding officer of NNS Centenary and the leader of the operation commended the ship’s captain – a woman’s bravery and courage which he said made the operation successful.
Ms Zetta Gous-Conradie, the captain of Sufmarine Kuramo commended the Nigerian navy for responding swiftly to her distress call and described the experience as horrific.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian army said it will take strict measures and southeast region of the country.
