CURE FOR HIV/AIDS FINALLY FOUND?

CURE FOR HIV/AIDS FINALLY FOUND?

By FRANK

Research using man-made, blood-forming stem cells has shown great promise in animal experiments in suppressing HIV.

But now a grant from the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) has funded a clinical trial using those bio-engineered stem cells to treat HIV patients who have lymphoma, a deadly cancer that eventually kills people with AIDS.

Timothy Brown was the first patient to ever be cured of HIV after a bone marrow transplant to treat his leukemia received. He is known as the ‘Berlin patient’.

By using blood transplants from the umbilical cords of individuals with a genetic resistance to HIV, Spanish medical professionals believe they can treat the virus, having proven the procedure successful with one patient.

Now, a 37-year-old man from Barcelona, who had been infected with the HIV virus in 2009, was cured of the condition after receiving a transplant of blood.

While unfortunately the man later died from cancer just three years later, having developed lymphoma, the Spanish medical team is still hugely encouraged by what it considers to be a breakthrough in the fight against HIV and related conditions, according to the Spanish news source El Mundo.

Doctors in Barcelona initially attempted the technique using the precedent of Timothy Brown, an HIV patient who developed leukemia before receiving experimental treatment in Berlin, the Spanish news siteThe Local reported.

Brown was given bone marrow from a donor who carried the resistance mutation from HIV. After the cancer treatment, the HIV virus had also disappeared.

According to The Local, the CCR5 Delta 35 mutation affects a protein in white blood cells and provides an estimated one percent of the human population with high resistance to infection from HIV.

Spanish doctors attempted to treat the lymphoma of the so-called ‘Barcelona patient’ with chemotherapy and an auto-transplant of the cells, but were unable to find him a suitable bone marrow.

“We suggested a transplant of blood from an umbilical cord but from someone who had the mutation because we knew from ‘the Berlin patient’ that as well as [ending] the cancer, we could also eradicate HIV,” Rafael Duarte, the director of the Haematopoietic Transplant Programme at the Catalan Oncology Institute in Barcelona, told The Local.

Prior to the transplant, a patient’s blood cells are destroyed with chemotherapy before they are replaced with new cells, incorporating the mutation which means the HIV virus can no longer attach itself to them. For the Barcelona patient, stem cells from another donor were used in order to accelerate the regeneration process.

Eleven days after the transplant, the patient in Barcelona experienced recovery. Three months later, it was found that he was clear of the HIV virus.

Despite the unfortunate death of the patient from cancer, the procedure has led to the development of an ambitious project that is backed by Spain’s National Transplant Organization.

March 2015 marked the world’s first clinical trials of umbilical cord transplants for HIV patients with blood cancers.

Javier Martinez, a virologist from the research foundation Irsicaixa, stressed that the process is primarily designed to assist HIV patients suffering from cancer, but “this therapy does allow us to speculate about a cure for HIV,” he added.

Despite the joy and ululation, those who think its time to celebrate may have not done their research. The process of curing HIV referred to by the doctors is called Stem Cell Transplant (SCT). Whilst it has worked on this one patient, there is a lot more information about its viability and use as a cure for all people affected with HIV / AIDS.

To begin with, getting an SCT is much more dangerous than living with HIV.

To successfully complete an SCT you have to completely destroy the stem cells in your bone marrow using intense conditioning resulting in:

i. Low/No white blood cells – no ability to fight off infection, meaning even something as small as flu could kill you.

ii. Low Platelets– heavy risk of uncontrollable bleeding; nosebleed would most likely result in death.

iii. Low hemoglobin – you will need many, many blood transfusions.

iv. Graft vs Host disease – which can cause really poor quality of life or kill you.

v. A long time spent in hospital – weeks to months, if not a year plus.

Stem Cell Transplants do save lives, but judging by the risks state above, they only make sense for people who have specific life threatening conditions such as acute leukemia. These conditions would imply that loss of life is almost guaranteed, and certain, leaving SCT as the last hope or only option.

From a sensible perspective, HIV is now a manageable chronic condition in most cases. This “CURE” is certainly interesting but probably not applicable for almost all HIV positive people.

HIV is a minor inconvenience in the world of modern medicine. It is easily controlled with 1 pill (ARVs) taken once a day, typically with no complications or side effects.

However, dying from a bone marrow transplant because of the risks mentioned before is, by comparison, a major inconvenience.

There is great reason to be excited, however. Discoveries like these are a major breakthrough and can allow medical personnel to build on them for a more constructive and less intensive cure.

Trials are already underway to gather more information. They started in March 2015.

To decide if it could be done or not a trial, it was necessary first to note that Spanish banks umbilical cord had samples that will carry a key mutation that is responsible for transferring protection against HIV. This is the genetic mutation CCR5 Delta 3 , a variation that acts as a shield against the AIDS virus. Cells carrying this variant areimpermeable to the pathogen.

That’s what was discovered, almost by chance, with the Berlin patient, i.e, if a person receives bone (or cord blood) from another subject that carries this positive change, will renew your blood cells they are immune to HIV, the body that will end disappearing.

“We knew that Spain is a world power in number of cords and cellularity, because the collection protocol makes us samples with many cells needed for transplants in adults. So we decided to analyze those cells rich laces, 25,000. To this end, we agreed with all the autonomous communities and cord banks, “he told Rafael Matesanz, director of the National Transplant Organization, which has funded the search with about 100,000 euros.

After one year evaluating cord by cord to see which of them carried the mutation, said Rafael Duarte, who was director of Hematopoietic Transplant Program at the Catalan Institute of Oncology (ICO) and is now head of Hematopoietic Transplantation Oncohematology and the Hospital Puerta Iron, “we have managed to identify this feature 157 units, representing 0.6% of the Spanish population.”

That elite cords, and a solution for those offers that require a transplant for hematologic problem, an option to cure HIV to those who, besides being HIV positive, develop a cancer of the blood. “This is not a therapy for any patient with HIV. Only is intended for those who in addition to the virus develop leukemia, lymphoma, etc,” explains Matesanz.

With antiretroviral treatments available, a general therapy umbilical cord blood is not viable. First, because there are few units worldwide who carry the mutation makes the infallible cells against the virus, and secondly because this type of transplantation is not without risks. According to overall figures in Europe the expected mortality from complications of transplant is between 20% and 25%.

This is only acceptable in patients with very serious blood disease , which if not treat them in a short time, to death. Furthermore, according a study of over 100 patients, those with HIV who have undergone a bone marrow transplant have a higher risk of complications than for people without HIV. Therefore, there is a therapy for all HIV-positive people but to very specific cases, “says Duarte.

For all this is important to test this treatment in the context of a clinical trial, said the hematologist, because the protocols are the same in the various hospitals where it is made, monitoring will be equal and once the results are available, allow you to learn from experience experts worldwide.

The trial, which will involve the Puerta de Hierro Hospital, the Gregorio Maranon (both in Madrid), the Catalan Institute of Oncology (ICO), and the Hospital La Fe de Valencia, along with cord blood banks and the ONT, It aims to recruit patients in two to five years. “The first patient is already in. It is discussed in Madrid not until later this year or early next, because previously required to go through a chemotherapy [to kill tumor cells in their bone] and a conditioner that take several weeks. This is a person with a type of lymphoma and HIV we do not want to give more information, “said Duarte, who is the principal investigator of this trial.

157 cords mutation CCR5 Delta 3 identified in Spain continue to be part of the international registration, REDMO, but is an advisory committee (formed by doctors in hospitals, banks cord and ONT) through a protocol established to decide what to do with them if they are claimed by researchers from another country well for an HIV-positive patient with a hematologic or problem for a person without carrying HIV, consistent with the cord and requires a medical problem as a leukemia or lymphoma.

The trial, scheduled for three years and with a budget of 150,000 euros provided by the Mutua Madrileña Foundation, is within an experimental framework. “It is looking for a high amount of healing but the proof of the hypothesis that this transplant can make HIV disappear. The implications are qualitative rather than quantitative.”

The same view Josep Maria Gatell, co-director of the XV European AIDS Conference being held these days in Barcelona, is shown “is interesting in terms of research, no practical way for the current treatment of patients with HIV.”

CAITLYN JENNER’S ‘I AM CAIT’ REALITY SHOW BANNED IN NIGERIA

CAITLYN JENNER’S ‘I AM CAIT’ REALITY SHOW BANNED IN NIGERIA

 by FRANK

 JULY 4, 2016

Ever since Bruce Jenner announced his transition in 2015 and changed his identity to Caitlyn Jenner, she’s faced both public and private backlash. Jenner is using the negativity as fuel to stand strong as an advocate for LGBTQIA rights.

Jenner is using the public platform she’s built to help inspire and stand up for LGBTQIA rights. LGBTQIA is the current acronym for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, Asexual / Ally. I Am Cait is her E! reality show that follows her life through her transition, showing her ups and downs and how she adjusts to life with new friends that are in the same situation as her. The show has now been banned from all TV networks in Nigeria, reportedly due to “consumer sensitivity.”

According to Jenner, that will not stop her mission to advocate for LGBTQIA rights in Nigeria. She recently spoke with Bisi Alimi, a Nigerian gay rights activist, at the Aspen Ideas conference in Colorado, voicing her concerns about the issue. “We’ve had so many struggles in the United States, and we’ve been fighting this battle a long time. I just want everybody there to know that we’ve got your back. We’re out here, and we’re fighting the good fight.”

As of late, tensions have increased in Jenner’s personal life with her extended family. Khloe Kardashian has never been completely comfortable with Caitlyn’s transition and it showed as Caitlyn did not attend Khloe’s 32nd birthday party. Radar Onlinereports Caitlyn has been keeping to herself lately, allegedly feeling lonelier than ever after being snubbed by her own family members.

She spoke with CNN recently, saying, “I was throwing out my past like it never happened. And I’m very proud of those times. This was a big part of my past. It’s part of my life, it made me who I am.”

How To Care For Menstrual pain

Kenechukwu (Kenny) as fondly called by her friends is an accountant at one of these new generation banks. She is determined to make her career in her chosen profession, but she is slowed down by the pains she feels every month which reflects in her work output. She sometimes skips work on these days and this in turn results to some specific amount of money been deducted from her salary.

The pain she felt at that time of the month is referred to as menstrual pain; it is usually felt as a painful muscle cramp in the lower tummy. The pain is usually in intense spasms and other times it can be dull or constant. For some the pain comes before menstruation proper, for other it starts when bleeding begins and last for 2-3 days.

In the words of Dr. Okeke, painful menstruation or menorrhea is “ any sharp pain or aching pain that comes and goes or possibly pain in the lower abdomen or back. For most people period pain is normal but then the pain becomes too much it is not normal. It is basically caused by the brief moments of cut in oxygen to the contracting muscles.

Painful menstruation can either be primary or secondary, Primary menstruation comes around the time that menstrual periods first begin in otherwise healthy women, is the common constant monthly period cramp, the pain is not related to a specific problem as in the case of secondary menstruation, secondary menstruation on the other hand is the menstrual pain that is the underlying cause of endometritis, adenomysis or pelvic inflammatory disease it happens to women who have had normal period and it is related to problems in the uterus or in the pelvic.

The reason why some women experience more period pain than others is unknown, however if you have painful periods caused by an underlying condition, you may also have other symptoms such as irregular periods, bleeding in between periods, thick foul smelling vaginal discharge, pain during sex.
Whether primary or secondary, women who suffer painful menstruation, find it difficult to do their normal jobs, be it household, office related during those few days during that period.

What Are the Causes of Menstrual Pain?

There may not be an identifiable cause of your painful menstrual periods. Certain women are at a higher risk for having painful menstrual periods. However you are at risk of experiencing painful menstruation if are being under aged 20, having a family history of painful periods, smoking, having heavy bleeding with periods, having irregular periods, never having a baby, smoking,  having heavy bleeding, having irregular periods, never having had a baby, having experienced puberty early, which is puberty before the age of eleven.

How To Take Care of Menstrual Pain (self-care)

1.    Drink warm beverage
2.    Eat light but frequent
3.    Apply a heating pad to your lower belly area, below your belly button
4.    Do a light circular massage with your fingertips around your belly area.
5.    Keep your legs raised while lying down or lie on your side with your knees bent.
6.    Practice relaxation techniques such as meditation and yoga.
7.    Try over the counter drugs such as ibruprofen. I advise you start taking it a day before your period is expected and continue taking it regularly for the first few days of your period.
8.    Have warm showers or bath.
9.    Walk or exercise regularly
10.    Try vitamin b6, calcium and magnesium supplements, especially if your pain is from PMS.

A zoo keeper at Indonesia’s Surabaya zoo has landed in trouble after he was arrested and charged with impregnating a female orangutan, reports the Kalimantan Press.

A randy zoo keeper has been caught on camera having s*x with a female orangutan ape and impregnating the animal in the process.

A zoo keeper at Indonesia’s Surabaya zoo has landed in trouble after he was arrested and charged with impregnating a female orangutan, reports the Kalimantan Press.

The 38-year-old zoo keeper was filmed in full action by a series of hidden cameras put in place by the zoo’s security officials after doubts emerged about the man’s devious actions towards the zoo animals. He was caught on camera having sexual intercourse with the animals.

“Some animals seemed sexually aroused when it was time to feed them” explains Akhiroel Yahya, employee of the zoo for 14 years. “But what made us most suspicious was when we discovered Marylin, our oldest orangutan, was pregnant. She has never been in contact with any other orangutans because of her aggressive nature, so it didn’t make any sense” he acknowledges, visibly troubled by the news.

Then out of curiosity and desire to know, the zoo officials decided on what to do.

“At first, we clearly did not comprehend what had happened,” admits the zoo’s director, Abdoel Hakim. “Marilyn has been secluded for the past 10 years, it was a total mystery,” he acknowledges. “It is only when we placed several hidden cameras that we learned the horrible truth” he admits, visibly angered by the whole situation.

However, the zoo keeper had denied everything. He denied any wrong doing on his part.

“He said everything he had done was consensual,” explains police chief Abubakar Jaar. “He said he loved each and everyone of the animals and was very sorry he had impregnated the orangutan,” he told local reporters. “He says he did not know orangutans could get pregnant from humans,” he added.

“Contrary to popular belief, the orangutan species is much closer to the human species than chimpanzees. We share practically the same DNA code, with only minute differences, which could explain the orangutan falling pregnant from this man” explains Paleobiologist Bachtiar Pado Panghulu, of the University of Jakarta.

“Particularly in Indonesia, the genetic profile of some of the population is extremely close to the orangutan species, leading us to believe they’re might have been a common ancestor to both species only a few hundred thousand years ago,”he admits

EgyptAir plane crashes over Mediterranean

By FRANK

An EgyptAir plane with 66 people aboard crashed during a flight from Paris to Cairo early Thursday, according to reports.

French President François Hollande confirmed that the passenger plane carrying 66 people crashed over the Mediterranean Sea, but did not comment on what caused the disaster.

No hypothesis is being ruled out, he said.

Meanwhile, Egypt's Prime Minister Sherif Ismail said that it was too early to speculate about mechanical problems or terrorism, and that nothing could be ruled out immediately.

The airline said Flight MS804 had disappeared from radar after taking off from Charles de Gaulle Airport. It was over water, about 175 miles off the African coast, and had just entered Egyptian airspace when it went missing.

Sixty-six people including crew were aboard the flight that vanished early Thursday morning.

The plane — with 10 crew and 56 passengers on board, including two babies and a child — was scheduled to touch down in Cairo shortly before 3 a.m. local time.

As of 11:30 a.m. in Cairo, the Egyptian military was still searching for the 2003 model Airbus A320 with assistance from Greece and a French surveillance jet that was already in the region.

Hellenic National Defense General Staff spokesman Vasilios Beletsiotis told the Daily News that two planes, two helicopters and a frigate had been sent to an area south-southeast of the island of Karpathios.

An Egyptian Armed Forces spokesman said that no distress message had been received from the plane, prompting speculation about what sudden events could take it off course

Egyptian officials have not yet found a reason for the disappearance. Above, Prime Minister Sherif Ismail talks to reporters.

Thirty Egyptians, 15 French and two Iraqis were on the plane, in addition to one person each from Algeria, Belgium, Canada, Chad, Great Britain, Kuwait, Portugal, Saudi Arabia and Sudan.

The disappearance comes roughly two months after a man from the Middle Eastern country made international headlines for hijacking an EgyptAir planeby saying he was wearing a suicide vest.

The disappearance of the current plane (pictured flying near Zaventem airport in Brussels in 2015) follows the hijacking of an EgyptAir jet in March.

(KEVIN CLEYNHENS/AP)

Seif Eldin Mustafa, 58, said he made the vessel land in Cyprus, in an attempt to see his ex-wife on the island.

No one was injured in that incident, and Mustafa is facing extradition back to Egypt.

In late October, 224 people were killed aboard a Russian plane leaving the country's Sinai Peninsula. Most of those who died were tourists.

Islamic State militants later claimed responsibility and said it brought the flight down with a bomb

REAKING: Stephen Johnson Syndrome hits Nigeria, one killed, another hospitalized

BREAKING: Stephen Johnson Syndrome hits Nigeria, one killed, another hospitalized

By Frank

The Federal Minister of Health, Issac Adewole, has revealed that there is a new disease in Nigeria which has killed a Nigerian while another is currently undergoing treatment at the National Hospital Abuja.

Briefing journalists in Abuja, on Friday, Mr. Adewole said the health condition known as Stephen Johnson Syndrome (SJS) was an unusual allergic reactions in Nigeria and some parts of Europe.

He said, “We have to find a means to communicate with Nigerians,so they should all be aware of this dangerous disease and it is the sole business of government to enlighten the society by trying to increase their awareness, knowledge and to improve their quality way of life.”

Dr. Olanrewaju Falodun a Senior Consultant Physician/Dermatologist at the National Hospital, Abuja, shed more light on the disease and the cases being handled in his hospital.

“Stephens Johnson Syndrome, is an immune complex mediated hypersensitivity reaction that typically involves the skin and mucous membranes and was first described in 1922 by Albert Stevens and Frank Johnson,” Mr. Falodun said.

SJS is a rare and unpredictable reaction, and is also a minor form of toxic epidermal necrolysis with less than 10 percent body surface area involvement, the consultant said.

“SJS is a rare but serious and potentially life-threatening contagious drug reaction. Incidence of SJS is estimated between 1.1 and 7.1 cases per million per year and is more prevalent in women than men. Incidence in Europe is two per million per year” Mr. Falodun said.
He confirmed that two cases were being treated at the Abuja National Hospital, saying one patient already passed while the other was still undergoing treatment.

He said the incidence was higher in Africa due to extensive use of herbal preparations and the prevalence of HIV.

He listed the symptoms of the SJS disease to include fever, sore throat, running nose, fatigue, general aches and pains, ulcers in mouth, genitals, anal regions as well as conjunctivitis.

The health complications, Mr. Falodun said, are pigmentation problems, skin scarring, scarred genitals, joint pains, lung diseases, obstructive disorders and eye complications, adhesions, ulcers, and blindness.

He however said the cause of the disease remained unknown in a quarter to half of cases but that self-medications appeared to be one of its causes.

He advised Nigerians to avoid misuse of drugs, while individuals with previous drug reactions should always inform healthcare practitioners so that in future they would be able to predict who is at risk of the disease using genetic screening.

Here are ways Mr. Falodun said SJS could be managed by hospitals:

1. Cessation of suspected drugs

2. Hospital Admission: Preferably in burns unit/intensive care

3. Nutritional and Fluid replacement

4. Temperature maintenance

5. Pain relief

6. Mouth-care
